Course Description:
This course is a series of lectures and student experiences covering a
variety of professional and clinical issues relevant to speech-language
pathologists.
Course Goals/Objectives:
The student will:
1.
demonstrate understanding of ASHA and the process of becoming a professional in
the field of communication disorders(Standard III-H)
2.
evidence understanding of the licensure requirements for the state of Louisiana
(Standard III-H)
3.
demonstrate understanding of the principles of ethics in the delivery of speechlanguage therapy (Standard III-E)
4.
demonstrate knowledge of the scope of practice in speech-language pathology
(Standard III-G)
5.
demonstrate understanding of clinical competences related to the delivery of
speech-language services(Standard III-G)
6.
demonstrate specific skills in selection of therapy targets and formulation of
behavioral objectives for therapy (Standard IV-B)
7.
demonstrate understanding of the basic principles of behavior management
(Standard III-D)
8.
demonstrate understanding of the basic principle of reinforcement and stimulus
control (Standard III-D)
9.
demonstrate technical writing skills as evidenced in therapy treatment plans and
progress summaries (Standard IV-B)
Course Requirements:
1. Observations: Each student will complete 5 hours of observation of SLP clinical activity
(diagnostic and/or therapy) within the LSUHSC Speech and Language Clinic. These
observations and their reports will contribute to 25% of your final grade. An observation
report is due after each observation.
2. Assignments: (15% of your grade)

skills acquired through this class.

3. All students will be required to have copies of any undergraduate clinical practicum hours
(observation hours and direct patient contact hours) sent to LSUHSC.

It may also be hand delivered by the student or faxed to my attention from the
undergraduate program.
4. Students should check Moodle daily as assignments, readings and class time changes will
be posted there.
5. Mid-term and Final examination: Exam will consist of objective items, multiple choice and
short essay questions covering information presented in readings, lectures, and class
discussions. (60% of your final grade)
6. Class Attendance:
As is stated in the LSU-HSC Catalog/Bulletin, Students are expected to attend all
scheduled appointments in each course. Determination of the number of absences which
may be interpreted as excessive rests with the Department, and is subject to approval by
the Dean. Promptness and attendance are mandatory for all scheduled classes.
Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class period. An absence occurs when a
student misses an entire class period or is more than 15 minutes late for a scheduled
class. Please note: If you are observed texting, or engaging in non-class related activities,
throughout the class period, you will be issued a non-excused absence for that day of
class. You will be notified after the class is over by the class instructor.
After the first absences, whether excused or unexcused, each unexcused absence will
result in the loss of three (3) percentage points from the students final grade. An excused
absence includes, but is not limited to, illness, accident, medical emergency, or death in
the immediate family. Immediate family members include spouse, children, parents,
grandparents, siblings, and in-laws. Approval of excused absences is at the discretion of
the instructor.
