SPTHAUD 6210: Fluency Disorders

Course Description: the theoretical foundations of disfluent behavior will be reviewed.
Differential diagnosis, principles of therapeutic techniques for children and adults will be
studied.
Textbook: Logan, KJ Fluency Disorders, Plural Publishing 2015.
Course objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Analyze speech to determine the dimensions of fluency
2. Differentiate normal disfluency from stuttering
3. Determine the psychosocial factors influencing clients stuttering behaviors
4. Differentiate cultural f actors influencing the clients stuttering behaviors
5. Synthesize an appropriate evaluation approach for pre-school, school aged and
adult stutterers
6. Develop therapy plans for preschool, school-aged, and adult stutterers
7. Master the techniques of
a. Relaxation
b. Negative practice
c. Easy relaxed approach-smooth movements
d. Delayed response-resisting time pressure
e. Cancellations
f. Pull outs
Course requirements:
1. Laboratories: There will be laboratories during which specific techniques to alter
stuttering behaviors will be practiced. These labs will take place during class time
and will require participation by all students in small groups.
2. Projects:
a. Diagnostics: For those students who have not completed a fluency
diagnostic evaluation on a client. Each will be assigned a diagnostic
evaluation to complete independently or in groups. Each group will be
responsible for preparing for the evaluation, conducting the evaluation,
and completing a diagnostic report. All students will do a staff
presentation of the client they evaluated.
b. Treatment plans: Each group will prepare a plan of treatment for the client
they evaluated. The treatment plan should be for one semester duration.

CLASS ATTENDANCE POLICY:


Attendance is required in all classes. If you must miss a class because of an illness,
injury, or emergency situation, you will need to let the instructor know as soon as
possible. It is the students responsibility to find out information that was covered in
class on the day of the absence. Unexcused absences will result in loss of points from the
total points accumulated for the class. An absence will be defined as missing more than
30 minutes of any particular class session.
Use of cell phones, text messaging, study for another class or doing work other than what
is being done in class is prohibited as it is felt that this is extremely distracting and
disrespectful of fellow classmates and the instructor. Points will be taken off for any of
these disruptions in class.

Grading scale: Final grades will be based on the total points accumulated across the
diagnostic, the written report, the treatment plan and attendance.
