OVERVIEW/RATIONALE
LastweekstudentsdidaPhETactivitycalledReactants,Products,andLeftovers.WhileIhad
introducedtheconceptofmoleratiotothem,wehadnthadextendedconversationsorpractice
ontheuseofmoleratiosinproblems.Studentsstruggledthroughtheactivityanddidnotachieve
thelearninggoalsthatwehadsetforthem.Yesterday,Ihadstudentsrevisittheactivity(afterwe
hadspentmoretimedoingmoreformalworkandpracticewithstoichiometryandusingthemole
ratio).Moststudentsarestillstrugglingtounderstandtheconceptoflimitingreactant.Duringa
smallinformaltutoringsessionIaskedstudentsforfeedbackandtheyrequestedsomemore
structuredapproachestotheprocess.Keepingthisinmind,Iwilltrytowrapupthoughtsand
ideasonlimitingreactantsinthisclassperiodsothatwecanmoveontopercentyieldand
practicalapplicationsofstoichiometry.

OPENER

Asaclassopener,studentswillbeaskedtosolvealimitingreactantproblemanddescribethe
stepstheytooktosolvetheproblem.Iwillcollecttheirresponsesandusetheirdescriptionof
theirprocesstoinformhowwelongIspenddiscussingdifferentmethodstocalculatinglimiting
reactants.
BODYOFTHELESSON
(30minutes)
Iwillreviewthewarmupwithstudents.Iwillreintroduceandtrytodestigmatizetheideaof
limitingreactantstostudentswithaclipfromfatherofthebride(hotdogsandhotdogbuns).
Studentswhofeelconfidentintheirmethodandapproachwillgivenpracticeproblemsforthem
topracticecalculatinglimitingreactants.IwillaskthemtoworkquietlyasIhelpstudentswho
needmoreinstructionandhelpwithfindingamethodtodeterminealimitingreactant.
WewillbrieflyreviewthevocabularyrequiredfortheseproblemsandIwilltalkstudentsthrough
twomethodsthatIhavecomeacrosstofindingthelimitingreactant.Iwilldemonstratethesetwo
methodsusingthesameproblemusingslidesandthechalkboard.
Studentswillthenworkinsmallgroups/pairsonthelimitingreactantproblems.

StudentswillbegivenafulltestnextFridayontheentiretyofchapter9(stoichiometry,limiting
reactantsandpercentyield).Iwilldoagradedwarmupnextweektoinformbothmyselfandthe
studentsofhowtheyaredoingwithregardstobothlimitingreactantsandpercentyield.
