VAE 101 Lesson Plan


Lesson Title: Collage Chaos
Length of Lesson: 2 hours

Objective
(SWBAT):

The students will be able to incorporate main themes found in


their book into their collage
The students will be able to explain each aspect of their collage

Materials:

Glue, 8x11 Construction Paper, Scissors, Magazines, Books for


each student

Vocabulary:

Collage, Themes, Symbols, Plot, Characters, Setting, Magazines

What is the main theme of your story? Can you give a summary
of your story? What are the most important elements involved
in your story? What kind of symbols could you use to represent
this?

Instructional

The class talk at their tables while I set up the


front table and the demo
As a hook, I would read the children The
Giving Tree
Afterwards, I would ask questions about the
book, asking for main symbols and themes
I will introduce the lesson to the children
o I will show my pre-made demo of a
collage made of The Giving Tree and
explain some of the symbols I included
and how they connected to the book
I will group the children by reading level give
them each a book
The children will read their books
I will have the students gather into their book

groups and talk about the books as whole and


the important elements in their book
I will have the students from each group talk
about what are some important things that
they feel should be included
I will have the students gather around the
front table to show them the demo
I will review the scissor safety rules and the
appropriate use of glue with the children
o How do you hold the scissors? What is
the only thing we are supposed to with
the scissors? What are you supposed to
do with the scissors when you are not
using them? How do you hold the
scissors when walking? How much glue
are we supposed to use? What happens
when we use too much glue?
The students begin to work on the project
o I will walk around to answer any
questions and observe the students
progress
I will tell the students to clean up and review
the clean up procedure
o The students will clean up all the scraps
on their table
o I will remind them to look on the floor
and pick up any scraps that might have
fallen and throw them all away
o The students will put away glue,
magazines, and scissors in the
appropriate places
I would ask the students if they were happy
with the outcome of the project with a quick
thumb assessment
