main characters, recollects memories of how his family and the black community
were molested, beaten to death, burned at stake, and enslaved, with no limit to
age
.
With the combination of violence and racist actions, this book can be
overwhelming for any age, let alone a young student.
On many pages, there is also use of racist remarks and
bad language. Using offensive words such as n***** throughout the book, is
definitely not the right type of vocabulary a student should encounter in a school
library. For example, on page 111, Mr. Barnett screams out Whose little n***** is
this!, following with ..... maybe that way you wont be bumping into decent
white folks with your nasty self! Is that the type of wording any child should
encounter in an academic environment? While maturity plays a part,
unrespectable text should never be a part of a young scholars reading.
Standing on the side with concerned parents, who care about what their child is
reading, I believe this book should be banned.
Sincerely,
Drishti Modi
