PART 2: Visual Piece

I have attached a word cloud depicting important elements for FYC

This word cloud originated from my ideas and thoughts detailing FYC. First Year
Composition requires willing participants and teachers who engage in the writing
process on a daily basis. Perhaps this takes the form of daybook writing which
encourages writers to compose daily. This activity in and of itself does not create
better writers, but direction and guidance from instructors and a chance to discover
voice and experiment with language without fear of reprisal engages students in the
writing process. Writing continues to evolve from a process of drafts, comments by
students and teachers, revision where needed enhancements occur (for example
grammar and conventions), culminating in publication. This could take the form of a
portfolio of achievements.
Several components should be integrated and considered for success in FYC.
Students must develop strategies for analyzing patterns in language and images in
any text and for [creating] a complex thesis in terms of confirming and complicating
evidence (Farris 171). Being able to disseminate information through critical, close
reading of a variety of texts, forge a statement of argument, and then present
evidence to bolster ones stance proves invaluable as a skill in FYC.
Another integral component is a piece of self-reflection. Below is a very miniscule
example of one used in my classroom at the culmination of the senior research
paper (Figure 1). Figure 2 includes a picture of several revision strategies (Urbanski).

Students including personal growth statements and overall thoughts through the
process of writing enable more contemplation and development as a writer.
Strategies for revision enrich writing and ensure delivery of the desired message.
