Exercise 9. Let K be an algebraically closed field. Show that every isomorphism of K onto a subfield of
itself such that K is algebraic over [K] is an automorphism of K, that is, is an onto map.
Proof. For an algebraically closed field K, let represent every automorphism : K [K] K such that
K is algebraic over [K]. Hence, we can say that K is an algebraic extension of [K] that is algebraically
closed, which then implies that K is the algebraic closure of [K]. Consider the isomorphism
1 : [K] K.
By the Isomorphism Extension Theorem, we can extend 1 to an isomorphism of K onto some subfield of
K. However, since the image of 1 is all of K, had to have been onto K. Thus, is an automorphism
of K.
