TITLE: Middle School Transition Meeting, High School Course Planning Guide
DATE: May 2, 2016
DESCRIPTION: This is a copy of an agenda for a Middle School Transition
Meeting with 5th and 6th grade teachers and staff. Additionally, there is
PowerPoint lesson focused on planning high school classes.
COMPETENCE: School Guidance Counselor Guideline 7: Demonstrate
knowledge of developmental approaches to assist all students and parents
at points of educational transition such as, home to elementary school,
elementary to middle to high school and high school to postsecondary
options.
EXHIBIT IMPORTANCE FOR STUDENTS: Transitions bring times of
excitement, uncertainty, and insecurity. It is important for professional school
counselors to recognize transitions within a school and understand the
impact these transitions have on children, parents, and teachers. Counselors
are expected to assist students but also assist in educating parents and
providing resources as needed.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN AS A RESULT? The majority of my background in
education is at the secondary level. Ive facilitated career development
lessons and also provided information for parents. My role was to foster
career exploration for students based on their strengths and interests.
Secondly, I helped students and their parents look at the type of training or
education necessary for those careers, the high school courses required for
admittance, and to help simplify the college exploration process. I quickly
learned that transitions are and should be a process and it is best to provide
accurate information early to both parents and students. I also realize that
every student is unique and that it is my job to help students look to the
future based on individual goals and help them reach their potential.
