A. Main Point 1- History of Barbershop Music
a. Sub-point- One of the only a few types of music created in the United
States. Another being Jazz.
b. Sub-point- Started by two men named O.C. Cash and Rupert Hall, in
Kansas City. Roof of Hotel
c. Sub-point- Named for men getting together in barbershops to sing.
d. Transition statement- Which takes me to how it is sung
B. Main Point 2- Four Part Harmony
a. Sub-point- Tenor true harmonizer, Lead melody, Bass keeps the
rhythm, Baritone sings all the in-between notes to mess everything.
b. Sub-point- Seventh Chord makes it barbershop and not just a
cappella a seventh chord is an interval of four notes a seventh above
the original note.
c. Sub-point- Can be sung with 4 people, a quartet, up to a full chorus.
d. Transition statement- these quartets or choruses could be male or
female.
C. Main Point 3- Mens and Womens Barbershop
a. Sub-point- Barbershop Harmony Society, Sweet Adelines, Young
Women in Harmony There are chapters all over the world.
b. Sub-point- Both have Championship contests for both quartets and
Chorus
c. Sub-point- Not just for old people. There are camps all over that teach
young singers the style of barbershop.
