Once the site was selected and surveyed, a drawing that included topography and

important features (i.e. trees, wells, landmarks, etc.) was created in AutoCAD. The
structure selection was limited to what was available in the NRCS library because
the client had previously received funding from the NRCS. The team worked with
Rick Williams to choose a standard NRCS roof/pad (VA-SO-253-FF) to act as a
workable and appropriate shell for the step method design. While NRCS has yet to
approve the roof for this application, the footprint of this facility is 12 ft x 40 ft,
which is just under the 500ft2 limit of the grant. The shell, which consists of a gable
roof and concrete pad, aided the designed material flow system as its partitions
gave the team flexibility to design the process within the facility (Appendix E).

Based on the selection of the shell, load calculations were done to check the
suitability and safety of the pad (Appendix A).
