Student Progress Summary

Throughout the semester, Shakira has experienced adjustments in her personal life, but
she has also made substantial gains towards transition planning. Her living situation has
changed from the beginning of the semester and is likely to change again in the upcoming
months. Shakira is currently living with her mom in a shelter in Bryan; however, they are
searching for a new place to live. In conjunction with the change in her familys living situation,
Shakira has experienced other personal and structural transformations.
Despite the alterations happening in Shakiras life, her progress towards transition
planning has steadily moved forward. Shakira has wanted to work in a nursing home or
assisted-living facility since her mom started dealing with health problems; however, through
the transition planning process, Shakira has gained a clearer picture of what career she wants.
Now Shakira knows she wants to work as a personal-care aide. The career assessment and job
analysis confirmed Shakiras desire and orientation towards being a personal-care aide.
Shakiras strengths and preferences match well with a job as a personal-care aide, so she should
continue working towards goals that will help her succeed in this career. Shakira has researched
the skills and requirements of being a personal-care aid, but she can continue moving towards
this career by participating in more work-based learning experiences in nursing homes and
assistive living facilities.
Educationally, Shakira has gained enough hours to move from a freshman to a
sophomore. Shakira has made progress in her classes partially as a result of the additional help
she receives in math models and content mastery. Her goals in education have also become
more well-defined. Currently, Shakira is looking at the possibility of attending the PATHS
program at A&M to become a direct support professional. At the beginning of the semester,
Shakira was unsure of the purpose and benefits of this program. After finding more information
on the program, Shakira appreciates the programs ability to move her towards her goal of

working as a personal-care aide in a nursing home or assisted-living facility. Shakira has also
learned how to be a self-advocate in education by creating a presentation and statements that
explain what she needs and wants.
Previously, Shakira had not given much thought to her goals for independent living and
recreation/leisure, so this semester has helped her form future aspirations in these areas.
Shakira wants to be independent and support herself, and she has realized the importance of
having self-determination and independent-living skills in order to accomplish this. She wants
to learn how to manage money, cook, and use transportation. Also, she knows she needs to
express her needs and wants in order to receive adequate support. Furthermore, Shakira was
not interested in participating in recreation/leisure. Now, Shakira knows the value of being
involved and has shown greater interest in participating in interest groups and volunteer
opportunities. Shakira is still deciding what types of recreation/leisure opportunities to pursue
and working towards independent living goals, but she has made adequate progress in these
areas.
Shakira is on the right track to achieve her transition outcomes. She is more aware of the
opportunities available to her educationally and has confirmed her vocational passion. Shakira
knows the skills she needs to work on to live independently and reach her goals after graduation.
Despite the difficult changes she has undergone this semester, Shakira has grown in selfdetermination and self-advocacy. Shakira needs to continue making progress on gaining
independent living skills, finding recreation/leisure opportunities she enjoys, and completing
steps on the timelines of her transition outcomes.
