Adding and Subtracting is a math lesson for kindergarteners. Students will use manipulative blocks to show and understand when a number is being added or subtracted by either taking away or adding blocks. They will be graded on how many they got correct and if they missed some they can stay after school for some additional help and for some more 1 on 1 instruction.

Grade Level: Kindergarten Suggested group size: Individual instruction Subject: Math Standard: Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, drawings, claps, acting out situations, explaining, and/or equations (e.g., 2 + 3 = 5). Objective: The student will understand addition and subtraction by using manipulative blocks to show and understand when a number is being added or subtracted by either taking away or adding blocks. Materials: Manipulative blocks, Ziploc bags, worksheet with different equations Procedures 1. Pass out bags with manipulative blocks and worksheet with equations 2. Explain or remind the students of what addition and subtraction is 3. Tell them to open up the bag and take out the blocks 4. Explain and demonstrate how they will use the blocks to understand addition and subtraction by doing the first equation with them in front of the class 5. Have them start on the rest of the equations on the worksheet and have them write the answer down while walking around to see if anyone needs additional help 6. When everyone is done, make sure they put their blocks back in the bag and collect worksheet Assessment: They will be graded on how many they got correct and if they missed some they can stay after school for some additional help and for some more 1 on 1 time.
