Chapter 4 Reflection

America has created a system whereby learners with special education needs are, in many cases,
identified, tested, labeled, and segregated before they ever have a chance to function in a general
education environment. This practice violates the concept of least restrictive environment and
misinterprets what continuum of services meant.
I think that this is important due to the fact that we have to remember not to do this as teachers
and to follow the RTI pyramid. Some children just need a little more to be successful. As a future
teacher I plan to use the RTI pyramid to help fight this and to help create a more child centered
classroom. By creating this child centered classroom, I feel like I am creating an inclusion
classroom because I am learning how each of my students learn best, that includes the students
who have disabilities.
Many students with behavioral issues never return to the general education classroom: theyve
been handed a sentence, not provided a service. This practice needs to stop because it is not
child-centered (that is, individualized) or educationally responsible.
I really believe that this quote goes back to the other quote mentioned. That is talking about
creating a child centered classroom and how this benefits the inclusion classroom model that we
are striving for. It helps to make it where you can create a plan that benefits each student in your
classroom. As a future teacher I plan to use this child centered approach in using a child study of
sorts to see how each of my students learn best and to see if they need extra help to be successful
in the classroom.
