Addition w/Objects

Lesson:
Whole Group: 8:50-9:00
-Review Addition
-Introduce plus and equal signs
-Plus sign means to add--have students say "add" after saying plus
-Plus sign means putting the two groups together
-Equal sign means "is the same as", "total", the two groups that are added together
-Group problem using chart paper: "If I have 4 green circles plus 2 red circles, how many circles do I
have in all?"
--While modeling problem with cubes, encourage students to hold up their fingers to add with teacher.
-Review plus and equal sign before breaking into groups
*Split class into 3 groups for math table rotations
Rotation 1 9:00-9:10
Group 1 w/Teacher, Group 2 at lion Table (Have students pick a pattern or addition paper in a sheet
protector. Have them use bears to complete activity independently), Group 3 at Elephant Table w/Mrs.
Shifflett (Skittle Addition)
Rotation 2 9:10-9:20
Group 3 w/Teacher, Group 1 at Lion Table, Group 2 at Elephant Table
Rotation 3 9:20-9:30
Group 2 w/Teacher, Group 3 at Lion Table, Group 1 at Elephant Table
Group w/Teacher Lesson:
-In the Pond
-Have ponds and papers pre-printed and pre-cut for students
-Go through each of the addition problems, having students use the manipulatives.
-Once they figure out the answer, have them write it in the blank
Objective:
The students will successfully add two groups of objects. The students will identify that putting two
groups of objects together is "adding" them. The students will identify the plus and equal signs. The
students will be in a whole group and small group setting. The teacher will assess students through
observation.
