Wisconsin Parkinson

Association 3-on-3
Basketball
Tournament
By: Mitchell Skarban

Background Information
My grandmother, Carolyn Litscher, was

diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease just

over three years ago.
I decided to look into organizations

dedicated to Parkinsons disease and

found the WPA (Wisconsin Parkinson
Association).
I held a 3-on-3 basketball tournament

Wisconsin Parkinson
Association
This organization is centered in Milwaukee,

Wisconsin. It serves Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa,

Michigan and Indiana.
WPA provides information and resources about

Parkinsons Disease to enhance public education

and awareness of the disease and to support
people with Parkinsons and their families.
Through the dedication of the WPA to serve the

community it helped launch the Parkinson

Research Institute in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
founded in 2002.

My Vision/Mission
I wanted to have an 8 team 3-on-3 basketball

tournament.
Donating all of the proceeds towards the WPA.
I wanted to impact the Parkinson community

in a positive way. Money is always a necessity

for these organizations.
I wanted to help others understand and help

to get rid of this terrible disease.

The Tournament
I had 2 divisions of four

teams each. I did the

seeding based on who
responded to me first.
The number 3 seed in the

west division of the bracket

won the tournament. The
team was Max Tramburg,
Pat Brouillard and Anthony
Berndt.

Complications

I wanted to charge $5 a person for the tournament

but some players didnt want to pay that. I

changed the price down to $10 a team.
It was also difficult to find a time that the gym was

open and that the teams could make it. I finally

got a date that worked on April 22nd.

Leadership Styles

I had to step out of my comfort zone by

forcing myself to take control of this

project.
Task Oriented Leadership
At the beginning of the project I had

to be very task oriented. I had a

checklist of what needed to be done
first.

Leadership Style Cont.

Relational Style Leadership

For the actual tournament I was more

relationship oriented. I tried to talk to

everyone and help everyone to have an
enjoyable time.
Transformational Leadership
As the referee I had to be very interactive
I was also passionate about what I was

doing this tournament for.
