Estimation
From the survey we conducted among 28 students of Mapua Institute
of Technology, their average budget for this years Christmas gifts is
P507.51. Using 217.45 as the standard deviation, we would like to find the
95% of confidence interval of the true mean.
1. Since the number of sample is less than 30, we are going to use the t-test.

x t a
2

( sn )< < x+ t ( sn )
a

2. Using the level of confidence, we are going to compute for

corresponding value on the t-distribution table.

Look for the value of t with the given v &

t=2.052

Questionnaire:
1. Do you spend money on buying Christmas gifts? Yes/No
2. If yes, how much will be your budget?

HYPOTHESIS TESTING

Social Weather Stations (SWS) claims that atleast 35% of 1200 Filipinos
attending Simbang Gabi are completing the 9 days of this tradition. To test this
claim, a local group surveyed among 75 Filipinos who are attending Simbang Gabi,
using simple random sampling. Among the sampled fans, 33% say that they are
completing the 9 days tradition of Simbang Gabi. Based on these findings, can we
reject SWS hypothesis that atleast 35% of the Simbang Gabi attendees are
completing the 9 days tradition? Use a 0.05 level of significance.
Solution: The solution to this problem takes four steps: (1) state the hypotheses,
(2) formulates an analysis plan, (3) analyse sample data, and (4) interpret results.
We work through those steps below:
1. State the hypotheses:

H o : p=0.35
H 1 : p>0.35
2. Formulate analysis Plan:
For this analysis, the significance level is 0.05. Single proportion using Z-test
is used.
3. Analyse the Sample Data

p(1 p)
n

0.35(10.35)
75

=0.55076
z=

^p p

z=

0.330.35
0.55076

z=0.363136

p ( z >0.36313 )=0.6363
Then, p-value = 0.6+ 0.6 =0.12
4. Interpretation:
Since the p-value is greater than significance level (0.05), we cannot
reject the null hypothesis. The claim of the SWS is not true.

Questionnaire:
1. Are you attending Simbang gabi? Yes/No
2. If yes, do you complete the tradition of Simbang Gabi? (9 days) Yes/No
