Standard #8: Instructional Strategies

The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to
develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply
knowledge in meaningful ways.
Name of Artifact: Service Learning Reflection
Date: April 7, 2016
Course: EDUC 101: Introduction to Teaching
Brief Description:
This is an overview of my experience at Avon Middle School during my service learning
project. It begins with a brief introduction of the teachers that I observed, how what I learned at
AMSN compared to what I have learned in my education classes, a swift glance at the literal
experience that I had in the classroom with my supervising teachers, and the finally, how this
experience will affect and apply to my future classroom. The point of this assignment was to
spend an extended amount of time in a classroom to really get a feel for the way that a day-today routine at school feels, as well as to see the different types of kids and personalities that I
will need to know how to work with as a teacher.
Rationale:
To document my understanding of InTASC Standard 8, Instructional Strategies, I had
originally been planning to follow one special education teacher for eight weeks to get a feel for
whether or not special education was a road I wanted to take. I had the opportunity to see how
different special education teachers conduct their classrooms throughout the day, as well as how
every class is different based on the personalities in the classroom.
