Simplifying Expressions

Karan wants to find an equivalent expression to

3n + 4 + (-2n) + (-2). He uses Alge-tiles to figure it out.
+n

-n

+n

-n

+n
+

The zero principle (+1) + (-1) = 0 helps him figure out that
this expression is equivalent to:
+n

OR

n+2

Use Alge-tiles to simplify these expressions:

a.3 + m + 4 + m =
b.8 + h + 2h + 10 =
c. 7 w w + 9 =
d.2 k + 4 + 2k =
e.3s 5s =
How would you simplify this expression?
3m 2 + 4t 5 3t

Create three different algebraic expressions and their

equivalent expressions to meet each of these conditions:
- One expression has 6 terms and the equivalent one has
4 terms.
- One expression has 6 terms and the equivalent on has 2
terms.
- One expression involves two variables, but the
equivalent expression only involves one variable.

1.Model each expression. Then write an equivalent

expression.
a.2n + 4 + 4n + 8
b.3n + (-5) + (-4n) + (-3)
c. 2n 8 + (-6n) + 2
2.Use equivalent representations to describe this sum: A
number is added to three more than it and two less than
it.
3.Write an algebraic expression with 5 terms that is
equivalent to an algebraic expression with 3 terms.
4.Show a simpler way to describe the expression. How do
you know the simpler way is equivalent to the original?
a.4 3x + 17 + 9x
b.8y + 9x 7x2 2y + 6 3x
