Filling Atticus Shoes

The last day of school was here. I was no longer a child. Scout would be staying here
with Cal and Atticus. She wouldnt be happy with my departure at the end of the school year, but
I had to. I had to move on to fill Atticus shoes.
Scout could be heard rustling around the house, bumping into things, humming. Shell
never admit that she hums, but she does. Maybe she picked it up from Dill. I lay in bed,
unwilling to get going. My door creaked open and Scout poked her head inside my room.
Cal says to get you up or else youll be late for your last day of school. And we dont
want you to have a blemish on your perfect record. Scout moved to sit down on my bed.
Scout, what do you think of me going to law school?
Scout thought about that statement for a moment. Is it because of Tom Robinson? She
finally asked in a soft voice.
I nodded. I want to change this town. I want to protect Atticus. He tried to protect Tom,
but couldnt because this town is too prejudiced and stuck in its ways. Im going to law school,
and Im going to be the best lawyer there ever was!
Atticus must have heard my outburst because he entered the room. He took a look at the
scene in front of him. He seemed to have aged a lot faster after Toms death. I supposed nothing

kills a man faster than failure. However, that only added to my motivation. Someday I will be
back here, and I will change this town. Someday I just might fill Atticus shoes.
