Plattsburgh State Introduces First NCAA Division I Hurling Team in Nation

PLATTSBURGH, NYHurling is the national game of Ireland and it is resembles a cross between
field hockey and baseball. Irish International student Connor Eckert, a sophomore Expeditionary Studies
major, spearheaded this historic change by communicating with the SUNY Plattsburgh athletic
department and then the NCAA about bringing his native sport to the US collegiate level of competition.
Staying in compliance with Title IX, the college is introducing both a mens and womens team. The
NCAA is listening to bids from other US universities to be accepted into the division I level for the sport.
The inaugural season at the division I level is set to begin in the spring of 2017.
Hurling is a game that I grew up playing, and when I came to school here at Plattsburgh I have told
many of my friends about and they all thought it was really cool. Im glad that I was able to get enough
of a following from both men and women to make this happen, said Eckert about making his dream a
reality.
The athletic department is allowing a walk-on based tryout system to begin in the fall of 2016. Once a
mens and womens team are assembled, practices will begin promptly to prepare for the season.
