Question 1

A power-law fluid with density of 850 kg/m3 is required to be transferred through a distance of 5.0
m in a pipeline before exiting to the packaging section with the velocity of 50.0 m/s. In the plant
store, there are only three types of pipes available to be used, each with a particular nominal pipe
size to be chosen from to transport the fluid. Table Q1 shows the internal diameter and the
absolute roughness of the different pipes. An engineer is required to select one(1) of the pipes
based on the minimum pressure drop in the fluid flows through the 5.0 m length.

a.

Analyse this task carefully to select the correct pipe required for this fluid transport with
minimum pressure drop.

Useful information and formulas

Rheological properties of the fluid are K = 1.2 2 and n = 0.4

Question 2

A fluid of constant density is flowing in laminar flow at steady state in the vertical y-direction
between two flat and parallel plates. The distance between the two plates in the horizontal xdirection is 2xo and the height of the flat plates is L. The width of the plates is taken as W.
It is given that the overall momentum balance equation is:
Sum of forces acting on control volume = rate of momentum out rate of momentum in + rate of
momentum accumulation
