Lesson Topic: Prepositions


Grade: 4/ 5
Standards:
1. Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and
usage when writing or speaking.
a. Explain the function of conjunctions,
Prepositions, and interjections in general
and their function in particular sentences.
Anticipatory
Set

I will use a small object (pencil, eraser) and a plastic container. I will place
the item in different positions (Above, below, besides, inside.) of the
container. I will ask my students to explain how and where I am placing
my object.

Objective /
Purpose

Students will identify and use prepositions correctly in sentences.

Instructional
Input

I will ask a student to demonstrate one position that I used to show a


preposition. I will ask the whole class to copy the student. I will explain
why thats a preposition.

Modeling

I will have my students grab their pencil and place it in different positions.
Place students into 3-4 students. Then I will have them model different
positions to represent prepositions.

I will write down a word on the board. Students will show thumbs up/
down to agree or disagree if a word is a preposition.

Guided
Practice

I will ask for a volunteer to get up and demonstrate one way that they saw
his or her group used to show a preposition and share out using a complete
sentence.

Independent
Practice

Homework: Students will create a sentence that demonstrates their ability


to identify and use preposition. They should be ready to share out with
their groups the following day.
