b. Studentmayhavebeendetainedbyanotheradult,mayhavesignedoutforanappointmentormay
beskippingclass.Inanycaseweareresponsibleforknowingwherethatstudentislocated.
8. Schedule/ClassLocationChanges
a. Ifyouwillbeholdingclassoutsideofyourclassroompleasenotifytheoffice.Besuretotakeyour
GOBAG,includingtheorangefolder,withyou.
b. Anychangestothedailyschedule(regularschedulesorspecialschedules)mustbeapprovedby
administration.

UnexcusedAbsences
Studentswhosenamesappearinthebulletinas
"DoNotAdmit"
musthaveawhiteadmissionslipfrom
theofficebeforebeingadmittedtoclass.

StudentIllness
Ifastudentbecomesillandhastoleaveyourroom,sendhimtothenursesofficewithapassorcallthe
office.Otherwise,takehimtothehallandnotifytheoffice.DoNOTallowstudentstouseclassroomphones
tocallhomeiftheyareill.Studentsmustseethenursebeforecallinghome.Studentsmustbecleared
throughtheofficewhenleavingtheschoolbuildingill.

INSTRUCTIONANDEVALUATION

LessonPlans
Allteacherswillpreparelessonplansusingtheschoolsformat.Theywillbeplacedinthe3ringbinder
providedatthestartoftheschoolyear.Theyaretobecompleteenoughsothatasubstitutelookingatthemcould
conducttheclass.
Teacherswillpostintheirclassroomthedayslearningobjective.Teachingstaffwillusetheterminology
TSWBAT(TheStudentWillBeAbleTo):_____________________PleaseuseBloomshigherorderthinkingskills
(Taxonomy).Dailyobjectiveswillreflectknowledgeandincorporationofstatestandardsandbenchmarks.

Evaluations
TeachersintheirfirstandsecondyearsofemploymentinU.S.D.470willbeevaluatedtwiceeachyear,
onceeachsemesterthefirstevaluationtobecompletedbythe60thschooldayofthefirstsemesterandthesecond
tobecompletedbythe60thschooldayofthesecondsemester.
Teachersintheirthirdandfourthyearsofemploymentshallbeevaluatedatleastonceeachyearby
February15th.TeachersinsubsequentyearsofemploymentwithU.S.D.470(fifthyearormore)willbeevaluated
atleastonceeverythreeyears.TheevaluationshallbecompletedbeforeFebruary15thoftheyeartheevaluation
isdone.
Morefrequentevaluationsmaybedone,ifdeemednecessary,attherequestoftheteacherortheevaluator.
AllACMSfacultyandstaffmemberswillbeevaluatedonaregularbasis.

STUDENTEVALUATION/RECORDS
GradingGuidelines
1. Eachteacheristoestablishhowgradeswillbedeterminedandistoinformthestudentsatthebeginningof
thecourse.Awrittencopyofgradingprocedureistobeturnedintotheprincipalwithintwo(2)weeksafter
schoolstarts.Districtpolicyrequiresthatthefollowinggradingscalebeused:

=B
70%79%
=C
60%69%
=D
Below60%
=F

2. Studentgradeswillbeissuedforeach9weekgradingperiod.Semestergradeswillalsobegiveninall
classes.ScoresshouldbepostedintoPowerSchoolnolaterthanaweekafterassigned.

3. Allincompletegradesmustbetakencareofwithintwoweeksofthelastdayofthat9weekgradingperiod,
andthe"I"shouldbeconvertedtoalettergrade.Teachersareresponsibleformakingthesechanges.A
reminderwillappearinthebulletin.
a. Teacherswillcommunicatewithparent/guardiantheprogressofstudentswhendramaticchanges
(goodorbad)occur.Agradecardshouldnotbethefirstnoticeparentsreceiveofafailinggradefor
theirstudent.

DISCIPLINE
Pleasenotethefollowingguidelinesforyourclassroom:
Rememberthebestsolutionforinappropriatebehaviorinaclassroomistokeepthestudentsactively
involvedinthelearningexperiences.
DONOTleaveyourclassroomunattendedorplacestudentsinthehallwayfordisciplinaryreasons.
Alwaysspeakinpositivetermswithyourstudents.Negativecommentsengendernegativeattitudes.
Positivecommentsengenderpositiveattitudes.

Teachyourstudentstheroutinestheywillbeusinginyourclass.

Beforereferringastudenttotheoffice,pleasemakesureyouhavedoneeverythingpossibletocorrectthe
situation.Completeadisciplinereferral.Writedownspecificallyeverythingthathashappened.
Donotwritea
generalsummationofmorethanoneincident
.Includeinyourreportalistingoftheproblemsolvingstepsthatyou
havetakenwiththestudentandwhentheyoccurred.Referralsmustbeprofessionallywrittenandarenottoinclude

thenamesofanyotherstudentthantheonebeingreferred.Theoriginalreferralismailedhometoparents.
Firsttimeoffendersarenottobesenttotheofficeunlessthesituationinvolvesflagrantmisbehavior.
Contacttheparentsbyphone

andsolicittheirhelp.Ifatelephoneconferenceisnotpossible,arrangea
meetingtimewhenyouandtheparentcandiscussthesituation.Parentcontactisnecessaryforeveryreferral.
Bepreparedtokeepthestudentafterschoolforaconferenceandpossiblysomeformofdetention,which
willbemonitoredbytheteacher.
Onceyouhavereferredastudenttotheofficeyouhavecompletedyourresponsibilityforthatsituation.
Consequencesassignedwillbeatthediscretionofadministrationandguidedbythedisciplinehandbook.

CSRReflectionPurposeandGuidelines
ThepurposeofaCSRReflectionistotemporarilyremoveclassroomdisruptionsandprovidetimefor
appropriatereflectionbyboththestudentandteacher.EachtimeastudentissenttoCSRthegoalistodiscourage
inappropriatebehaviorsandtoimprovethemannerinwhichstudentsmanagetheirbehavior.

Guidelines:
StudentswhoaresenttoCSRforreflectionmusthaveaCSRReflectionSheetwiththetimesent,offense,
andteachersnamefilledinatthetop.Thereflectionsheetwillreturnwiththestudent.
StudentswhoaresenttoCSRforreflectionwillbebackinclasswhentheirreflectioniscompleted.
Studentsareresponsibleforanyworkthatismissedduringreflectiontime.
Teachersmaychoosetoassignstudentstomakeuptimeanddiscusstheinappropriatebehavior.

DETENTION

WhileassignedtoCSR,studentsaregivenindividualclassroomassignmentsprovidedbytheirclassroom
teachers.Teachersmayalsochooseforstudentstocometoclassforinstructionandhavethestudentsreturnto
CSRforindependentpracticeorassignments.Astudentwhodoesnotreceiveassignmentsfromhis/herteachers
beforehis/herclassistobeginwillbesenttoclass.Anystudentwhoarrivesinclassbecausehe/shedidnothave

SexualHarassmentandOtherHarassment

The policy of Arkansas City Unified School District is that all students and employees have the right to an
environment free from all forms of discrimination and conduct which can be considered harassing, coercive or
disruptive,includingsexualharassment.

The district'spositionis thatsexual harassment isaformofmisconduct that undermines the integrityof productive
relationships. An employee/studenteither male or femaleshould not be subject to unsolicited or unwelcome
sexualoverturesorconduct,eitherverbalorphysical.

Sexual harassment refers to sexually motivated behavior that is not welcome, that is personally offensive, that
debilitatesmorale,andthat,therefore,interfereswithoneseffectiveness.

When analyzing the effects of harassment, courts look at how the conduct would be perceived by a reasonable
person in the victim's circumstances and nothowit was intended by the harasser. Whether the alleged harasser
feelsthatthecommentsorbehaviorwerenotoffensiveisimmaterial.

Guidelines
1. All employees and students are covered during any school activity on or off school property. Sexual
harassmentofUSD 470students/employees initiated by nonUSD 470 students oremployeeswillbereported
tolegalauthoritiesforaction.
2. Sexualharassment,whether committedbystudentsoremployees,isspecificallyprohibitedbydistrictpolicy,
regardless of the manner in which the district becomes aware of the conduct. Such behavior will result in
disciplinaryactionuptoandincludingdismissal.

Implementation

1. It istheresponsibilityofadministrators to ensurethat all buildingsareinfullcompliancewiththis policyand


associatedlegalguidelines,i.e.,Sec.703ofTitleVIIoftheCivilRightsActof1964.
2. An employee/student who has a complaint should report such conduct to his/her teacher, counselor,
administrator,or supervisor. Ifthisisnotappropriate,theemployee/studentisurged toreportsuchinstancesof
harassmenttothedistrictsuperintendentordesignee.
3. Acomplainantwillcomplete thereport form availablefromeitherthe buildingprincipalordistrictoffice. Use
offormalreportingformsismandatoryinorderforactiontobetaken.

ProceduresforResolutionofSexualHarassmentClaims

Anindividual mayresolve aproblemof sexualharassmentpersonallybymeansofdirectdiscussionwith the


otherparty. Inthe eventthat such directand immediate attempts are not successfulor, in the view of the
individual,arenotpossible,theproceduresoutlinedbelowshallbefollowed.
Complaints ofsexual harassmentshouldbebroughttotheattentionofthesuperintendentordesignee. Any
complaint of sexual harassment is confidential and should involve only those individuals necessary to
resolvetheissue. Whennecessary,anadministratorofthesamesexasthecomplainantcanbe designated
toreceivethecomplaint.
The appropriate administrators will be notified by the superintendent or designee of any complaints
registeredbyand/oraboutemployeesundertheirsupervision.
After notification of the employee's complaint, a confidential investigation will immediately be initiated to
gatherall facts aboutthecomplaint. Thisinvestigationshallbeconductedbythesuperintendentor his/her
designee.
The investigating employee shall investigate the complaint, notify the person who has been accused of
harassment, and permit a responsetotheallegationandarrangeameeting todiscussthecomplaintwithall
concernedpartieswithin10workingdaysafterreceiptofthecomplaint.
After the investigation has been completed, a determination will be made by appropriate administrative
personnel regarding the resolution of the case. Theinvestigating employee will give awrittenresponse to
thecomplainantwithin15workingdaysafterreceiptofthewrittencomplaint.
A substantiated charge against a student or staff member of the district shall subject such harassing
individualtodisciplinaryaction.
Thefollowingresponseoptionsareavailableforresolutionofanyharassmentcharge:
a. administrativeconference/counseling
b. writtennotice
c. Administrativemandatespecifyingnointeractionwiththevictim
d. formalletterofreprimand
e. probation
f. suspension/expulsionortermination
g. forwardtolegalauthorities
If the individual bringingthecomplaint isnotsatisfiedwiththeresolutionofthecase,she/hehastheright to
appeal totheBoardofEducation. AppealstotheBoardofEducationshouldbefiledwithin10workingdays
after receipt of the investigating employee's report. The Board of Educationwill, within30 working days,
conduct a hearing at which time the complainant and alleged perpetrator of harassment willbe given an
opportunity to present evidence. The Board will give a writtenanswer tothe complainant within10working
daysfollowingcompletionofthehearing.

Retaliation against employee(s)/student(s) who bring sexual harassment charges or


assistininvestigatingchargesisalsoprohibited.
11. Any employee(s)/student(s) bringing a sexual harassment complaint or assistingin the
investigation of such valid complaint will not be discriminated against or
disciplined/dischargedbecauseofthecomplaint.
