    The Korean War began in 1950 when North Korea, backed by China and the Soviet Union, invaded South Korea in an attempt to reunify the Korean peninsula under communist rule. After three years of fighting between North Korean and Chinese forces and United Nations forces led by the United States fighting to defend South Korea, an armistice was signed in 1953 that maintained the division of Korea along the 38th parallel.
