Schooldistrictscurrentlyhavenospecificguidelinesastohowtoincorporatestudent
inputintotheirLocalControlandAccountabilityPlans(LCAP).Thisleavesdistrictstotheirown
accordwhencollectingandutilizingstudentinput.Ifeelthisisadisservicetonotjuststudents
buttheschoolasawhole.
Schoolsareinthebusinesstoeducatetheyouth.WhenrunningabusinessIwould
assumethatbusinessownerswouldpreferhappycustomersstudentsareaschoolcustomers.
ImmyexperienceasaneducatorIhavefoundthathappystudentsaremoreengagedinthe
learningprocessandmakeupverylittleofschoolwidediscipline.Itwouldseemlogicalthenthat
wewouldwanttodowhatispossibleandwithinreasontocreateanenvironmentwhere
studentswouldbehappy.Wecanhelpmakethispossiblebylisteningtostudentinput,
incorporatingwherepossibleandthenfinishingtheconversationwiththehowsandwhysof
whatcouldbeimplementedandwhatcouldnot.
InvitingstudentstobeanactivepartoftheLCAPconversationalsoprovidesaunique
andvaluablelearningexperienceforstudents.Studentslearntheprocessofimplementing
change,workingasacollectivegrouptoafinalgoalandmaybeevenalittlebitofhowaschool
runs.Onlypositivescancomefromactivelyinvolvingstudentsintheschoolplanningprocess.
Attheveryleast,iftheirchangescannotbeimplementeditopensthedoorforstaffand
studentstohavetheconversationofwhyitcannot.Ihavefoundthatifstudentsunderstand
whysomethingtheywantcannothappen,theyharborlessnegativefeelingsoffrustrationand
anger.
Istronglyagreethatschooldistrictsneedspecificguidelinesandregulationsfor
incorporatinganddocumentingstudentfeedbacktoplanningprojectsliketheLCAP.Whilewe
liketobelievethatschoolswillengagetheirstudentsintheplanningprocess,itisnot
happening.Creatingthesechecksandbalancesforschoolsmayresultinmorepaperwork,
whichItoodislike,butitcreatesneededaccountability.
