Diversityineducationiskeytoprovidingstudentswiththehighestqualityeducationpossible.
Diversitycantbehaphazardlydroppedintotheeducationalprocessbutmustbeincorporatedinto
everyaspect.TheACSAisanorganizationthatworkstoensuretheequityanddiversityineducation.
Diversityineducationisnotlimitedtostudentsbutschoolleadershipaswell.
Oftentimesthetermsequityandfairhavebeenusedinterchangeable.This
misunderstandinghasleadtoaneverendingcircleoffrustration.Equityisprovidingeachstudent
withthenecessarysupportthattheindividualneedstocreateopportunitiesforsuccess.Fairisgiving
eachstudentthesamesupportregardlessoftheirindividualneedsorweaknesses.
Ifdiversityisoverlookedandleftbehindconflictscanarisethatcancreatebarrierstolearning
andteaching.Whendifferentculturesareplacedinthesameroomconflictsareboundtoarise.What
maybeconsideredperfectlyacceptableinoneculturemaybeoffensiveinanother.Forexample
makingeyecontactwhenastudentisbeingreprimandedforbehaviorchoicesnotinlinewith
classroomexpectations.Thestudentmaylookdownorawayasthisactionshowsrespectintheir
culture.Anunawareteachermaybecomefrustratedthinkingthestudentisnotpayingattention;
beingdisrespectful.Diversitycanalsobegeographicallylimitedtoapersonsneighborhoodortown.
Howapersonisraisedculturallyandsociallycanhaveanegativeorpositiveeffectontheir
educationaldependingonoverlappingacceptablenormsinboth.
Equityineducationandamongeducationalleaderswillnotoccurbecausewesayitwill.
Creatinganenvironmentthatcelebratesdiversity,recognizesindividualtalents,weaknessesandalso
providesaccesstotoolsandskillsthatprovideanopportunityforsuccesstakescognizanteffort.As
leadersineducationwemustusediversitytocreatewonderfullearningopportunitiesandchallenges
forourstudents,teachersandourselves.
