BurntRanchSchoolDistrictisexcitedtopresentthisproposalforyourconsideration.Welook
forwardtopartneringwithyoutoprovideourstudentswiththebestpossibleeducationaltools
possible.BRSisaruralK8schoolwith94students.Aseducatorswearecontinuallyfacedwith
thechallengeofprovidingourstudentsthesametechnologyexperiencesasoururban
counterparts.Thesetechnologyskillsandknowledgearevitaltoourstudentsfuturesuccessin
bothfutureeducationalpathwaysandcareerreadiness.

Wearerequesting$15,149.62foratechnologyupgradeintheBurntRanchElementarySchool
5th6thand7th8thcombineclassrooms.WiththisgrantwewillpurchaseaSMARTBoard6075
InteractiveFlatPanelandmountingbracketsforeachclassroom.Webelievethisrequestfits
underyourToolboxforEducationGrantbecauseitmeetsthecriteriafortwoofthecited
categoriestechnologyupgradesandtoolforSTEMprojects.

Anewinteractivedisplayisneedinour5th6thclassroomastheclassroomsteacher,Mrs.
Kilgore'sSMARTBoardhasfinallyquit.Mrs.KilgoreExtensivelyusesSMARTtechnologyinher
classroomsinceitwasinstalledin2008.Throughtheuseofinteractivedisplaysheisableto
conveylessonsinengagingandcollaborativeway.Theincorporationofinteractiveteaching
toolsstudentsbecomeconfidentandcomfortableusingoftechnology.Studentslearnto
problemsolve,createpresentations,workcollaborativelyinsmallgroups.

ThroughtheuseofSMARTboardTechnology,thephysicaleducation,fifth/sixth,and
seventh/eighthgradeteachersatBurntRanchSchoolplantoexpandourstudents
knowledgeusing21stCenturylearningskills.SMARTboard,orSMART,isaninteractive
computersystemthatisdisplayedonaflatpaneltouchsensitiveboardforhandson
interaction.StudentscanactivelyparticipateindynamiclessonsthroughSMARTsLearning
Suite.SMARTNotebookincludessubjectspecifictools,integrationwithmobiledevicesand
thousandsoffreelessonresourcesthatteacherscanusetocreateenrichinglessonsthatare
designedtoincreasestudentengagementandfosterunderstanding.Formativeassessment
isasnapwithSMARTresponse2softwarewhichallowsstudentstorespondtoquestions
usingtheirowndevicesanddeliversassessmentresultsinstantlytotheteacher.Wewilluse
SMARTacrossthecurriculum,includingmath,science,reading,languagearts,health,and
numerousotherareas.

Ourdistrictstrivesforexcellence.Weneedtoprovideourstudentswithaccesstoasmuch
21stCenturylearningopportunitiesaspossible.UpdatingtheSMARTboardequipmentin
thefifth/sixthclassroomandincorporatingaSMARTboardintheseventh/eighthgradeat
BurntRanchSchoolisaninnovativewayofensuringsuccessinhelpingourstudentsreach
theirmaximumpotential.

use.Kinestheticandvisuallearnerswillhighlybenefitfromthistypeoflessondelivery.
SMARTisalsoextremelyusefulinprovidingextrasupport/visualstospecialeducation
students.

ProjectDescription/Design

TheSMARTtechnologywillbeusedduringreading,languagearts,math,science,and
physicaleducationassupplementtoinstruction.Teacherscanquicklycreateandmerge
dynamic,interactivelessoncontent.OneofthegreatestbenefitsisthatSMARTcanbeused
duringanyunitinanycontentarea.Inmath,Geogebra(partofNotebook)offerspowerful
toolsandinteractivemathmanipulativesforallgradelevels,suchaseasyequationediting,
55,000+mathobjectsandactivitiesingeometry,algebra,calculus,andstatistics.Math
problemsandformulascanliterallybebrokenapartandtaughtstepbystepusingdigital
manipulatives.Inbothlanguageartsandreading,wewilluseitsfeaturestoguidestudents
throughtext.Wecanhighlight,notetake,insertimagesandvideo,andbeabletobetter
analyzetext.SocialStudiesandhistoryconceptscanbedifficulttograspincertainareas.
SMARTwillallowustobringhistorytolife,usinginteractivevideoandpictures.Wewillalso
beabletocreatedynamiccharts,diagrams,andtimelinesatspeedsfargreaterthancurrent
methods.Inscience,wewillbeabletotouchtheintangible.ConceptslikeEarthslayersor
experiencinganearthquakecannotbeproperlysimulatedinaclassroom.SMARTwillbring
ourclassclosertotheintangiblethaneverbefore.Additionally,theteachercanpausevideo
andwritedirectlyonthescreeninordertohighlightorcircleimportantconcepts.YouTubeis
accessibledirectlyfromNotebookteacherscanaddanyvideototheirlessonandresizeit
fortheirworkspace.Theusesareabundant.Inallsubjectareas,lessonscanbesaved,
printed,orrecordedforalllearners.Thisisespeciallyimportantwhenstudentsareabsent.
Lessonscanbereplayedatthestudent'sownpaceinsideoroutsidetheclassroom.
Onetouchaccesstoformativeassessmentsallowsteacherstocreateassessmentsinunder
5minutestoquicklygaugestudentunderstanding.Teacherscan
draganddropimagesonto
questionsandanswerchoicestocreatesuperbassessmentvisuals.

TheITLeadTeacherwillspendyearoneusingthenewtechnology,creatingdynamic,
engaginglessonsdesignedtosupportallcurriculumareas,especiallySTEAM
instruction/activitydesign.TheITLeadTeacherwillalsogatherstudentassessmentdataand
developtheyeartwostaffdevelopmenttrainings.Inyeartwo,theITLeadTeacherwill
facilitateallstaffinservicesandprofessionaldevelopmentworkshopsasaninkinddonation
totheproject.(Thecertificatedteacherandclassifiedstaffwillreceivestipendsfor
attendingthetrainings.Seebudget.)

Need/Rationale

Acrossthecurriculum,studentswillworkwithinteractivecharts,diagrams,websites,and
numerousothertoolsthatwilldeepenallstudentsunderstandingofcontent.Visuallearners
willbeabletoviewcontentusinginnovativelessons.Kinestheticlearnerswillbeableto
touchandmanipulateconceptsandlearning.Auditorylearnerswillbeabletohear
informationinnovelways.Inshort,SMARTallowsmultimodalinstructionthatbenefitsevery
student.

Inourexistingprograms,somecontentisnottangibleoravailabletobringintheclassroom.
SMARTallowsustobringconceptstostudentsinnewsways.UsingSMART,notonlycan
weviewtheinsideoftheearth,butwecaninteractwithit.Ourmathcurriculumcanbe
taughttostudentsinmoreinvitingways.Wewillbeabletostrengthenreadingskillsby

analyzingtextonscreenforallstudentstosee.SMARTsupportsinnovativecocurricular
educationalprogramsandpromotesourdistrictsstriveforexcellencethroughtheuseof
interactivetechnologythatcanbeusedacrossthecurriculum.

Evaluation

Despitethisprojectbeingatwoyearplan,ourevaluationofoursuccesswillbeongoing.Our
teacherswillcontinuetoevaluatetheeffectivenessofSMARTthroughtheuseofstudent
assessment.Wewillbeablegaugeeffectivenessineachsubjectarea.Also,theongoingdiscussion
ofeffectiveteachingmethodswillhelpourprogrammeetitsLCAPgoals.Oneofthebestfeaturesof
SMARTisthatcompletiondatesarenotnecessary,asthetechnologywillbeusedeachandevery
yearwherewecanconstantlyevaluateitssuccess.Wewillbeabletosharethesuccessofthe
SMARTatstaffmeetings.
