E-11 Medical/Surgical Asepsis
E-11-2 Demonstrate knowledge and ability to apply principles of
medical / surgicalasepsis when providing nursing care and
interventions.
One significant learning experience in this course that is related
to my chosen CLPNA competency is performing sterile wound
care. In this course I was able to practice the correct/sterile
technique in performing wound care. I learned how to cleanse
and pack a wound, irrigate, apply dressings, empty and empty a
JP drain tube.
I understood and was able to practice proper wound dressing. I
learned that maintaining sterility/sterile field is very important.
Nurses should always be mindful of maintaining sterility even in
donning sterile gloves. One little mistake can compromise the
safety (from infection) of the patient. In wound care too, we
should always practice proper hand washing prior to performing
the nursing procedures.

Good. I was able to understand the competency theory and apply

in scenarios and nursing practice. For this course, I read books
related to the skills in this competency and watched demo videos
to be able to learn the proper technique in performing wound care
related skills. During my practice at home with my skills kit, I
was able to practice and evaluate myself and I think I was able to
maintain sterile technique.
