A highly versatile strategy, HW! SW? NW?

moves students from factual

information through interpretation to prediction, implications, and
questions for further study.
In pre-assessment, identify the topic and have students list their prior
knowledge in the HW! Column. Then, ask them to explain the importance
of this information to them in the SW? column. Finally, students identify
predictions or questions for further study in the NW? column.
Steps in the Process:
1. Set-up the Heres What! So What? Now What chart for students as
follows:
HW!

SW?

NW?

2. Complete the Heres What column with factual information (students

individually or with the teacher).
3. Students complete the So What column by identifying the importance of
the Heres What information to them (interpretation).
4. Students complete the Now What column by making predictions,
inferences, and/or posing questions on the information and their
interpretations.
