what happened
So basically, New York Times or something wanted to publish their own stuff
without being punished for what they said. President Nixon had all authority and
had classified info. They wanted to print things about a certain secret part of the
government and were wondering if the first amendment would let them print it.
The supreme court ruled that the first amendment did protect the right of the new
york times to print it

continued
President Nixon claimed that publishing the evidence of what the Defense
Departments activity in Vietnam was unlawful. He argued that the restraints set against
publishing classified information were necessary to protect national security.

BIG QUESTION
Did the Nixon administration's efforts to prevent the publication of what it termed
"classified information" violate the First Amendment?

Yes. Judges Black and Douglas argued that the vague word "security" should not be used "to abrogate
the fundamental law embodied in the First Amendment." Justice Brennan reasoned that since publication
would not cause an inevitable, direct, and immediate event imperiling the safety of American forces, prior
restraint was unjustified.
