Pre-Planning: Using a Backwards Design Framework (ELE 4)

Unit Title: SHAPE AND SPACE (Measurement) - FOCUS on MASS

Grade: 1

Subject, Topic: Math

Timeline: 1 month

Culture and Expectation (ELE 1) :

1,2, 3 eyes on me - 1, 2 eyes on you, hands free
Your with me in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (hand in the air- kids will put hands in the air also)
Measurement video and songs in Drive (Math Songs)
2 hands on pan balance
You have 60 seconds to find your objects

Stage 1 Desired Results Clearly Identified Outcomes (ELE #2)

Learning Target(s):

Essential Questions:

Different objects weigh differently

There are lots of different ways to weigh objects:
-Pan balance, scale, food scale etc.
You can compare objects based off weight

SHAPE AND SPACE (Measurement) General Outcome

Use direct and indirect measurement to solve problems.
Demonstrate an understanding of measurement as a process of
comparing by:
1. identifying attributes that can be compared
2. ordering objects
3. making statements of comparison
4. filling, covering or matching.
I can use measurement words, such as heaviest, lightest, most,
greatest, and least.

Students will know

Students will be able to

How to order and compare objects based off mass

Student is able to demonstrate an understanding of measurement

as a process of ordering and comparing objects by mass

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence

PRE-Assessment (ELE 3):

Summative Assessments (ELE 12):

-Classroom discussions: what is mass?

-Mass:
Means how heavy something is.
-Mass videos
-Pan balance: use your arms to show what it would look like if you had an
elephant on one side and a feather on the other side.

-Performance task
-Mass paper assessment
-Measurement FINAL Technology assessment
Use of Rubrics and Exemplars (ELE 5):
-Mass assessment: paper and Computer FINAL assessment
Tracking and Communicating Outcomes (ELE 9):

Formative Assessment (ELE 10):

-Observations when weighing objects: listening to vocabulary
-Checking mass booklet
-Questions/Answers

-I can order objects and explain my ordering rule.

-I can compare different objects based off mass: heavier, lighter etc.

Stage 3 Learning Plan

Learning Activities:
Introduction to New
Knowledge (ELE 6):

Introduce
MASS
through video,
stop and talk
(did you hear
anything that
was
interesting or
you dont
know what it
means)
Class
discussion:
what does
mass mean
(link
vocabulary
heard in video
to discussion:
weight, weigh,
light-lightest,
heavyheaviest etc)

Experiencing the
New Knowledge
(ELE 7):

Using arms
like a pan
balance: Find
different
objects in the
room. Can
you tell if one
is heavier
than the
other? Show
me what your
scale would
look like using
your
arms.Use my
shoe and your
shoe: which is
heavier
Comparing 2
objects: color
the object
green if you
think it is
heavier &
color the other
object blue if
you think it is
lighter
Take a book
from your
bookbox:
would a
computer be
heavier,
lighter or
about the
same in
weight
(compare to 5
other objects)

Deepening the New

Knowledge (ELE 8):

Using a pan
balance:
weigh

Instructional
Strategies:
-Comparing different
objects on the smart
board: use arms to
show which would be
heavier or lighter
What would be the
heaviest out
of these 4
objects?
What would be the
lightest?
-Group work:
With student right
beside your
desk
Pick your partner:
make the
decision to
work with
someone you
work well with
Whole class
patterns and
numbers on
smart
board/whitebo
ard
-weigh and
order objects,
move 2 seats
over and see
if you can
explain their
ordering rule
-Look at the
order of
objects: can
you find some
more objects
that would
match these
ones? (finding
objects that
are about the
same wieght
as the ones
that are
already there)
-Using arms to
show heavier
or lighter
-Provide
feedback right
away
-Prompting:
prompt for
student to
look at
objects:
What do you see?
Heaviest item
or lightest
item?
-Practicing in
Mass booklet
