Understand Theories of Literary Interpretation

This outcome has presented itself in some form or another throughout my entire college
career. I have read countless novels, poems, and stories which have made me stronger reader
with each new course. There are many different ways to interpret literature, whether it be from
an academic view point or for pleasure. I have learned that there are various schools of criticism
that theorize about literary interpretation differently. The deconstruction theory, new critical
theory, and psycho-analytical theory are just a few of the ways literature can be interpreted.
However, literary interpretation does not necessarily have to take form of criticism. For some, it
is simply understanding what literature is and how it affects us personally. When interpreting
literature, it is also important to have the ability to recognize genre and stylistic elements. This is
necessary when studying various literary periods, movements, and themes. Each of these factors
can have an effect on the way literature is and understood. As I reflect on my past work over the
last four years, it is apparent that my skills of interpretation have progressed. I now have the
ability to recognize underlying themes, make broader connections, and recognize the period in
which the text derives. This deeper way of thinking and interpreting is a result of the third
learning outcome.
