Dear Publishing Committee,
As a linguistics major with minors in Editing and Spanish, I am interested in working as an editor in order to better
serve the XYZ Publishing house. I heard about this opportunity through a forwarded email from the Brigham Young
University humanities office and I am very interested in the position of Editorial Assistant.
My grandfather was a sea captain in the Merchant Marines and later a federal judge. Ever since I learned of the
service that he provided this country, I have always desired to serve others. Over the past four years, I have taken
courses such as Phonetics, Phonology, Syntax, Modern American Usage, English Grammar, as well as Introduction
to Print Publishing, Substantive Editing, and a few other book publishing classes. Additionally, during my last
semester of my undergraduate degree, I was offered a job as an editor and research assistant to a professor who is
working on a linguistic and textual analysis of an ancient literary work. I am an efficient and effective worker and all
of my editing experience qualifies me for this position.
I have created two different editing and writing portfolios, both of which are on a website that I created,
www.joshuawilliammitchell.weebly.com. The 2015 Portfolio was the final project for my Substantive Editing class.
It contains three personal writing samples and three personal editing samples. The 2016 Portfolio was the final
project for my Editing for Publication class, which class is the senior capstone of the Editing Minor. It contains three
personal design samples and three personal editing samples.
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you about an interview.
Sincerely,
Joshua Mitchell
