To promote inclusion and equality through the wheelchair tennis as a recreational opportunity
for all people of various ages and previous ability levels.________
Selected activities:
1.

Activity____Icebreaker : 2 truths and a lie___________

Timeline (break down of how time will be spent): 20-30 min. asking questions
performing the icebreaker
Instructions (use as many lines as needed to FULLY explain activity)
Ask each person in the group to think of two true facts about themselves, and one lie.
Each person in the group takes a turn telling the group their three items.
The group then has to agree on which fact they think is a lie. Once the group announces their
decision, the speaker tells the group the correct answer. The group then can talk about any of
the interesting things they just learned about the new person.

Equipment/materials needed (list): nothing


Precautions: Don't prod people answers if questioning people about a truth they might have
told the group.

Activity__Wheelchair Tennis warm-ups and clinic_______

30min 1 hr explanation of wheelchair tennis rules and techniques
1 hr of warm-ups
1 hr of drills to improve skills

Instructions (use as many lines as needed to FULLY explain activity)
- warm-ups will include stretching, proper wheelchair use for those able bodied participants
and grip for holding the tennis racket and pushing themselves. Also the rules that wheelchair
tennis has that makes it different than normal tennis to play later in the day.

The Service
a. The served ball may, after hitting the ground in the service court, hit the ground once again within the bounds
of the court or it may hit the ground outside the court boundaries before the receiver returns it.
b. The service shall be delivered in the following manner. Immediately before commencing to serve, the server
shall be in a stationary position. The server shall then be allowed one push before striking the ball.
c. The server shall throughout the delivery of the service not touch, with any wheel, any area other than that
behind the baseline within the imaginary extension of the center mark and sideline.
d. If conventional methods for the service are physically impossible for a quadriplegic player, then another
individual may drop the ball for such a player.
III. The Ball in Play.
The ball is in play until the point is decided. The ball must be returned into the opponent's court prior to it
touching the ground a third time. The second bounce can be either in or out of the court boundaries.
IV. Player Loses Point.
A player loses a point if:
a. He fails to return the ball before it has touched the ground three times.
b. He uses any part of his feet or lower extremities as brakes or as stabilizers while delivering the service,
stroking a ball, turning or stopping.
c. He fails to keep one buttock in contact with his wheelchair seat when contacting the ball.
V. Wheelchair/Able-bodied Tennis.
Where a wheelchair player as defined in Rule I above, is playing with or against an able-bodied person in
singles or in doubles, the rules of wheelchair tennis shall apply for the wheelchair player while the Rules of
Tennis for able-bodied tennis shall apply for the able-bodied player. In this instance, the wheelchair player is
allowed two bounces while the able-bodied player is allowed only one bounce.
Serving and receiving drills will be taught to improve the skills of our participants that are going to be needed to
play games and hopefully get to a tournament later in the day.

Equipment/materials needed (list): Wheelchairs, Tennis rackets, Tennis balls

Precautions: Make sure people are safely able to operate their wheelchair and serve
and return tennis balls before starting them playing games.
