Example 2.

26 A circle of 40 mm diameter rolls

along a line for one revolution, clock-wise. Draw
the locus of a point on the circle, which is in
contact with the line. Also, draw a tangent and a
normal to the curve at a point 35 mm from the
directing line

Draw the generating circle of 40mm diameter and mark its center O

Divide it into twelve equal parts and mark the points 1.......12 (P).

As the circle rolls on the line, mark the coincident generating point P

Draw the generating line PA

Length equal to the circumference of the circle

And divide it into the same number of divisions,

as that of the rolling circle and mark points as 1' to 12'(Q)

Draw the locus line of the center, parallel to the base line
and mark the points O1 to O12(B)

By erecting perpendiculars at 1', 2',.....etc

O1,....O12 are the instantaneous positions of the center.

When the circle rolls forward (or clockwise)

The point 1 and 1' coincide and the center moves to O1.

At that instant, the generating point P also moves forward,

maintaining the level or height of the point 1 before rotation..

Since the generating point P also maintains the same

radial distance in all its positions of movement

Obtain the point P1, by drawing an arc equal

to OP from O1 as center, on the horizontal line through 1

Obtain the other points P2.......P12, similarly with O2.O12 as centers

And join them by a smooth curve to get the cycloid.

To draw a tangent and normal at any point, (say M),

mark the point on the cycloid.

And cut an arc equal to the radius of the circle to meet at O.

And drop a perpendicular on the line PA and obtain N

Join M and N and extend it a little to get the normal.

Erect a perpendicular at M to the line MN,

and obtain the tangent TMT.
