Example 2.

33 In a simple slider crank

mechanism, the length of the connecting rod CD
is 1000 mm and the crank OC is 200 mm long.
The slider D moves along a straight line passing
through O. Draw the locus of a point P, located
400 mm from point C along the connecting rod,
for one complete revolution of the crank OC.

Principle: At any instant of time when the crank

occupies an angular position, the corresponding
positions of the connecting rod and slider are
identified. When the position of any point (say P)
on the connecting is marked and identified for
various angular positions of the crank, the locus of
the point on the connecting rod can be drawn by
simply joining these instantaneous positions of the
point P by a smooth curve.

Draw a circle with O as center and radius equal to the

length of the crank (200 mm)

Divide it into twelve equal parts and mark them as 1,2..12, which
indicate the various angular positions of the crank as it rotates.

The connecting rod and the slider position are identified and marked
for one angular position of the crank. For clarity the 5th position
of the crank is indicated as C

When the crank occupies the angular position indicated by 5, the crank
end is marked as C. The connecting rod position corresponding to this is
marked by drawing an arc with C as center and radius equal to the length
of the connecting rod (1000 mm) to cut the horizontal line passing
through O at D5.

The line CD5 indicates the position of the connecting rod

And D5 the position of the slider when the crank is at the angular
position indicated by OC.

The position of the point P on the connecting rod whose locus is

required is then marked as P5 by setting a distance of 400 mm from
C on the line CD5.

When the crank occupies other angular positions as indicated by

O1, O2..O12,the corresponding inclined positions of the
connecting rod and the slider are marked as in the previous step

For each position of the connecting rod the position of the point
is marked and hence the points P1.P12 are obtained.

These points when joined by a smooth curve give the locus

of the point P, when the crank completes one revolution
