Area of Exercise: C (Developing Values and Self Knowledge)


Title of Exercise: The Values of Hard Work (The Ant and the Grasshopper)
Objectives:
1. Working together as a group
2. Children will act out the skit in a way that is understandable.
3. Students will be able to explain their own Interpretation of the values
demonstrated in the skit.
Materials: Copy of the Ant and the Grasshopper
Grades 1-3 may use puppets
3-5 will use body movements
Description of Exercise: I will have previously read over the story of the Ant and the
Grasshopper with the children. Next Ill pass out a copy of the skit to all the students in
the class. While the copy is going around I will tell the children that they will be forming
groups and between group members they will choose parts. Once every one has a copy I
will ask for them to look in the left hand corner of their copy where they can find a
number 1-4 and 1a-4a. I will then ask them to form groups according to their number.
Once the children have formed groups they may begin. During the time that the children
are preparing to present the skit I will walk around helping and monitoring them.
Follow up Questions:
How did your group members decide who would play each part.
How did your groups choose to express each characters personality?
What did you enjoy doing this skit? Why?
How do you demonstrate hard work?
What could be done differently the next time we act out a skit to make it more
interesting?
Criteria for Evaluation:
Did the students get into groups and choose parts fairly.
Was everyone included in activity?
Were the children able to act out the skit in a way that was understood?
Did the children understand the moral of the story?
Were all of the children engaged in activity?

The Ant and the Grasshopper

Narrator 1: In a field one summers day a


Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and
singing to its heart's content.
Narrator 2: Then an Ant passed by, bearing along
with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to
the nest.
Grasshopper: Why not come chat with me, instead
of toiling with that very heavy ear of corn like
that.
Ant: I am helping to lay up food for the winter
said the Ant, and recommend that you do the
same.
Grasshopper: Why bother about winter? We have
plenty of food at the present.
Narrator 2: But the ant went on its way an
continued its toil.
Narrator 1.When the winter came the Grasshopper
had no food and found itself starving.
Narrator 2: While the ants had plenty of corn to
distribute each day, from the grain they had
stored all summer.
Narrator 1: Then the Grasshopper knew
Everyone: It is best to prepare for the days of
necessity.
