Post Trip Activities

Brief summary of what we did on our trip

On our trip to Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill we walked around the base of the
volcano and up to the summit. We saw the three craters and what way the lava
flowed. On our trip we also saw the Maori kumara pits and all the sheep!!!! At the
summit of Maungakiekie we got out our art books and pencils and started sketching
our landforms. On our trip we also went to the Stardome and learnt more about the
stars in the sky, the solar system and the types of storms and stuff on the different
planets.

3 new things I learned about Maungakiekie

1

Tree

The last tree that survived on

the summit of One Tree Hill
was a pine tree.

Kumara Pits

The kumara pits were

underground but the Maoris
lay rocks around the it and
made a little greenhouse to
absorb the heat. They didn't
make the greenhouse out of
glass.

The rock path

The reddish brownish rock

path was actually the lava flow
from one of the craters.

3 new things I learned at Stardome

1

Storms on planets

On most planets they have

storms. On Jupiter it has had
a hurricane for centuries.

Moon

I learnt about how the moon

travelled around the sun and
created different types of
moons like the crescent moon,
full moon and more.

How to find the

southern cross

Something I learnt at
Stardome is how to find the
southern cross. All you need
to do is find 2 stars 1 blue, 1
red. Then you point those
stars directly forward and you
have found the southern
cross. Also it's something that
looks like a kite.

My favourite part of our trip

My favourite part of the trip was when we went into the Stardome and lay back in
the chairs learning about the solar system, stars in the sky and the storms on the
different planets.
