the need to adapt, reteach

I will set my stopwatch, and
at 15 min I will give students
a warning that they have 5
min to complete their work,
and at 20 min you will be
asked to stop, quickly clean
up, then move onto next
material.

those who may need to review
what teacher verbalised to class.

things which people have mapped,
artistic interpretations and inspiration
drawn from maps, how Indigenous
people of Australia interpret the land
through their paintings. Today we will
be doing our own appropriation of
maps. Consider the diverse ways in
which people have approached maps
today, and think of how you will
interpret your map in your own unique
way.

'sketches' using different
materials. This is to free you
up to work more intuitively,
to not over think things, and
to experiment with new
materials!
The task will generate lots of
material which you can use
in your folio. Next week we
will select the most
successful exploration to
further investigate &
explore.

Explain task: (Students have each

brought in a map, as advised last lesson.
If any students have forgotten their
map the teacher will provide one.)
Students will re-interpret their map
through a process of exploration with
materials supplied by teacher.
(charcoal, paint, clay, collage)

Teacher will be aware of those

students who may require
additional assistance for task,
intervening where necessary.
Students who are physically
disabled who may not be able to
use all materials will be given
the option to choose one to use
for duration of lesson.
(The benefit of this task is that
students may observe peers for
further instruction if needed.)

You will be able to further

explore your most successful
experiment in the next class.
The resulting works will be
included in your folio
development.

Students will be given 15 min to explore

each medium, then they will move on
to the next material.

Students to clean up, then put their

works in folio. (Photo document clay

digital camera incase students do not
have mobile).

Quickly!
What did you enjoy the
most?
Students tidying after lesson.

Who is happy with what they

have created?
Is there a material you would
like to explore further after
today?

(Teacher summarises lesson.)

You have all generated a lot of
interesting and experimental material.
Some of you may have found that you
prefer working with one material over
another. Some of you may have found it
difficult to work quickly and
spontaneously. This lesson was
designed to free you up to work more
intuitively, to not over think things, and
to experiment with new materials.
You have all approached the materials
differently with your own creative flair.
Consider which 'sketch' you feel is the
most successful, you will be given the
opportunity to explore with that
material or working method further
next week.

What did you find difficult?

Students looking through

artworks made whilst listening
to teacher.

Were there any artists we've

been learning about that you
felt influenced your work
today? Who?
Which is your favourite
work? Why?

"What if I didn't like anything I

have made today?"

Take notes on student reactions

to task for self reflection/
improvement for future lessons,
and student strengths &
weaknesses.
(Summative assessment FOR
learning, and to improve future
lessons.)
-Did they enjoy it?
-Why?

-What did students struggle with

Could you think of any other the most?
materials which you would
like to experiment with now? - What material could I
add/substitute?
Does anyone have any
question?
- Did the students appropriate
the maps literally, or use
