Outline for SIFT Literary Analysis
Thesis:
Although they both use a lot of important dark elements for their stories, its significant
because they both use the effect of guilt and sin to tie into the psychological effect of the matter.
Poe and Hawthorne show that horrors of evil are lurking in everyone, however sometimes it is
worse for others.
Claims:
In Alone, Poe uses items and nature to symbolize that guilt and iniquity he felt trapped
inside of his being, and he did that to portray it to his readers in a different manner. His demons
were constantly haunting him, and he tried to interpret his feelings onto paper by using
symbolization, but also figurative language to compare actions to his present feelings.
In The Haunted Mind, Hawthorne uses items to symbolize the darkness and evilness
that controls his inner being, and he uses figurative language to show those emotions and
portrays them as people with certain traits.
In The Ministers Black Veil by Nathaniel Hawthorne, he uses symbolization and
figurative language to express the secrecy and psychological problems that lurked and haunted
Mr. Hooper to the point where he felt the need to wear a black veil.
All in all, each of these works portrays the haunted and spooky side of both Hawthorne
and Poe. These writers experienced tremendously dark times, and they discussed their feelings

on paper. By using symbolization and figurative language, they were able to retain the secrecy of
their demons, but expressed it in an interesting manner, which easily grasps the attention of the
reader.
