To teach history-social science effectively in elementary school, one needs knowledge in various topics including U.S. history, California history, historical figures, explorers, geography, Native American history, U.S. government, and the American Revolution. The author's history courses have prepared them well to teach topics like U.S. government, slavery, and Spanish missions, though a refresher on California history would be beneficial since some details have been forgotten over time. Studying history helps prevent repeating mistakes of the past.

In order to teach history-social science in an elementary classroom one must have
knowledge of U.S. history, California history, historical figures, early explorers, geographical features, history of Native Americans, U.S. government, Spanish missions and the American Revolution. The history courses that I have taken have in deed prepared me to teach historysocial science. In History 20 I learned much about California history. In history 11 I learned about U.S. history and U.S. government. History 301 focused on the study of individual, family and community aspects of society. In this class I learned much about Native American history, Spanish missions, the 13 colonies, slavery and about historical figures like Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, Cesar Chavez, and Malcolm X. I feel well prepared in the topics of U.S. government, slavery and Spanish missions. I believe I could get a little more instruction on California history because it has been a long time since I learned about it and by now I have somewhat forgotten. It is important that we study history in order to omit making mistakes that have been made in the past.
