When both hardware and software is used to restrict access to a network of data it is known as a
firewall. Firewalls refuse access to unauthorized personnel from logging on to guarded networks.
Filtering Software blocks certain materials from users, such as students on the internet at school. An
acceptable use policy is a guideline for users on a certain network. Firewalls, filtering software, and
AUPs are all important in the K-12 classrooms for many different reasons. For example, it helps to
protect the students from online predators, it helps limit cheating, and it prevents students from
searching inappropriate websites.
