Written by eighth grader Arielle Wilson, Not Like Everybody Else

illustrates the point of view of a girl who walks off the beaten path.
She talks about being lonely, and different. They joy of finding a
friend, and the despair of having that friend choose the popular
crowd instead. She stays true to herself though, and is ultimately
content when her hard work pays off and she finds that being
herself is its own reward.

As a project to go along with this article I would have the students
write about something that they feel that they are good at and
enjoy. After this, they will pair with another student who has a
different strength, and they will discuss both attributes. After they
learn about each other, they will come up with something that they
have in common. They will then share with the class about the

other persons strength. For more information on this project, an

example of the lesson plan is available under the Article Lesson
Plan button.

This article is a series of letters from children who each have
issues or challenges that they are requesting advice on. Each
letter represents a different challenge, and shows that each child
is different and has his/her own set of things that are important to
them.
For this project I would partner with a classroom from another
area. The students would write anonymous letters on a word
document, illustrating a problem they have that they would like
advice on. We would e-mail those letters to the partner class, and
that class would send us letters as well. Each class will answer
the letters to help out the students of the other class. For more
information on this project, see the lesson plan under the Article
Lesson Plan button.

This article describes how a newly invented glove can translate
sign language into verbal language. It mentions the number of
Americans who currently use ASL, and how the glove is thought
to improve their quality of communication with non ASL users.

This project is a problem based learning module, in which the
students contemplate and research the issues behind the
question, How can we end communication limitations in
education. The students would be introduced to the frustrations
of being unable to communicate effectively in a classroom setting,
and then coming up with possible solutions for the problem. For
more information on this project, see the lesson plan under the
Article Lesson Plan button.
