BelgianRockblueandyellowsharpeningstones
The"BelgianRockbluewhetstoneandtheyellow"Coticule"(StoneofVielsalm)arenatural
abrasivestonesforsharpeningofmetalblades.ThestonesarequarriedandfabricatedintheBelgian
Ardennes.Theyaresodurablethattheyshouldbeconsideredmoreofaninvestmentthanan
expense,asoftentheyarepassedontothenextgeneration.Theyareequivalentto4000and8000
grit,anddemonstrateremarkablecuttingcharacteristics,producingnoburr!
KnownsinceRomantimes,theBelgianCoticuleyellowwhetstonesourcewaslongthoughttohave
beenexhausted.However,in1996/97,workingtogetherwiththeUniversityofLiege,thegeological
depositsofrockclosetothetraditionalyellowCoticulewhetstonewerecloselyanalyzedwith
amazingresults.Ahighqualitywhetstonewasdiscoveredwithidenticalsharpeningpropertiesasthe
yellow,only blueincolorbecauseofironoxideinthestone.Thestonesarequarriedfromnearly480
millionyearoldgrey/yellow/pinksedimentaryrockwhichhasmetamorphosedfromclayandvolcanic
ashandnowcontainsgarnetcrystals.Whenthenonporousstoneiswetted,thecrystalsandwater
produceanabrasiveslurry.Thecrystalsareslightlyoval,resemblingasoccerballwithmanyfacets
(rhomboid)sittingatobtuseangleswitheachother.Wheretheymeet,they cut
lightlyintothemetaltakingfineshavings.Thehardnessofthegarnet,thirdonly
behinddiamond,allowsforquickremovalofmetal,buttheroundnessgivesavery
precisepolishofthehonededge.Whilethegarnetgrainsare1015micronsin
size,thepenetrationisonly about2or3microns.Thiscombinationofspeedand
finenessisuniqueintheworld.Youmaynotbelieveituntilyouseeit!!!

Thebluewhetstone,20to30%garnetby weight,isavailableinmany sizes,


evenlargebenchstonesizes,andproducesa4000gritpolish.

Theyellowisavailableonlyinsmallthinlayersandthereforeisgluedtoa
slatebase.Itisoftenoddshapedtomakeuseofalldeposits.Yellow
containsabout3042% garnetsofabout10micronsdiameter,foran8000
gritpolish.Therehasneverbeenabettersharpeningstone.Youwillownitforlife.
THE STONE MUST BE USED WITH WATER. NEVER USE IT DRY!

Placethestoneonaflatsurface.Movethebladeobliquely onthestoneintheusual
cuttingdirection,atthecorrectangle.Whetthefacesofknives,lancets,etc.,
alternately.
