Project Overview
The Middle East is a region in the world which has experienced extreme struggle due to the
presence of wealth, war and choice of worship. In the news we are continually bombarded
with negative occurrences in this region which has unfortunately resulted in adverse
connotations of the region and of its people as one of bloodshed rather than beauty. People
often fear what they do not know or understand. The way to combat that fear is by providing
truth, clarity, and an alternative storyline. Throughout the course of this project you will
demystify some of the complex aspects of the Middle East while learning to celebrate the
positive contributions of the cultures that reside there.
Project Duration
One week (4 hours a day)

Essential Questions
Where can we find beauty and optimism in the Middle East?
How can we combat people's fear and ignorance regarding the Middle East?
What will it take to achieve peace in this region?
Objectives
As a class we will read Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi to better understand how
the Islamic Revolution began in Iran and its impact on the region
You will have an opportunity to read one of the following: The Kite Runner, A
Thousand Splendid Suns, I am Mulala, Reading Lolita in Tehran.
You will compare, contrast and analyze the similarities and differences in
Middle Eastern culture.
