Formation of Sperm
The process by which sperm is produced is called spermatogenesis.
Spermatogenesis occurs in the seminiferous tubules.
In the average male human, the seminiferous tubules can produce about 1 million
sperm a day.
Males typically begin to produce sperm once they hit puberty; around the ages of
11 to 14.

Formation of Ovum

*********

The process by which ovum is produced is called oogenesis.

A diploid cell must go through meiosis (which involves duplicating a genome) which
will create four haploid cells. These haploid cells now have the ability to develop
into an ova called oogonia.

Process of Sperm Travel

Once a man and woman begin sexual intercourse, semen is signaled to begin its
pathway. Sperm will leave the testicles and enter a series of tubules(deferent duct,
spermatic cord, into the pelvic cavity, over to the ureter to the prostate. The Vas
deferens joins with the seminal vesicle to form the ejaculatory duct.) and exits
during ejaculation.
In the woman, the egg makes its way down the fallopian tube. The sperm's journey
from the vagina to the uterus can take hours. (The sperm can survive in the vagina
for three to five days)

Process of Fertilization
The remainder of the sperm will cluster around the egg, but only one will be
successful in penetrating the outside layer of the egg. Once penetrated, the egg will
form a thicker layer to keep out other competing sperm to ensure that the egg will
be fertilized by that one, individual sperm.
