Selena Gomez- UNICEF
I grew up constantly being surrounded by children. I have three younger sisters and lots
of younger cousins. At church on Sundays I also spend a lot of time working with the children
ministry. As a result, I have always adored children. It is so devastating to hear about the
suffering and pain children living in third world countries are going through. Every child
deserves proper basic human rights, such a food, clean water, and shelter.
My personal definition of literacy is having competence or knowledge in a specific subject or
field and using that knowledge for the greater good. Literacy can also mean the ability to read or
write. Childrens rights fit my definition of literacy because individuals are using their
knowledge of the situation at hand and lending their hand in providing relief, care, and support
for the children affected. Childrens rights are important to me because I love children and they
dont deserve to suffer. These children are young, and innocent, and full of life. They need
someone who will fight for them, someone who believes in them, someone with a voice. Theyre
young and probably really scared. As adults, I believe that we need to be that person for these
children that gives them a chance to do something or be something great one day.
The type of literacy I am focusing upon is childrens rights, more specifically with the
organization, UNICEF. UNICEF is the United Nations Childrens Fund. Their mission is to work

for the survival, protection, and development of children worldwide, through fundraising,
advocacy, and education. My main literacy sponsor is Selena Gomez, who is an ambassador for
UNICEF. I first heard of Selena Gomez when she was a star on Disney Channel. She then went
on star in different movies and become a recording artist as well. I have been a big fan of her
ever since she was on Disney Channel. Gomez went to Chile in 2011 to witness the work
UNICEF was doing there. She said of her experience, UNICEF is helping Chilean families get
out of poverty, prevent violence within the home and promote education. (Unicef). And To
witness firsthand these families struggles, and also their hope and perseverance, was truly
inspiring. I remember I was flipping through a magazine one day and I saw pictures of Selena
Gomez surrounded by lots of children in Africa. I thought that it was pretty amazing that she was
doing something like that.
In April 2012 Selena Gomez took part in an emergency relief program, called
#SahelNOW, in the Sahel region of West and Central Africa where there was a nutrition crisis. In
this region of Africa, malnutrition is becoming a severe and life threatening problem. She used
her Twitter and Facebook to Sound the Alarm to encourage people to donate money. She made
a PSA calling out for help and used her large social media following to send the message out and
it quickly spread.
There are many ways in which I could promote this literacy. I can get involved through
volunteering or donating for their cause. I can also bring awareness to their work, that way I
could entice others into learning more and becoming involved as well. I want to travel to travel
to Africa one day and aide in relief efforts there.
