HighSchoolConformity:TheGreatDebatebyDayanaSalazar

Society,alwaysthefirsttoestablishnormsandexpectations.Manyteenagerscanshowpride
ofbeingnonconformistbutyetseemveryaliketoothers.Teenagersareoftenpressuredto
becomedifferentbutfindthemselvesfollowingseveralgroupsguidelines.
Theauthorityfiguresandhigherinfluencesofthe
schoolsystemhaveasetstudentbodywhichis
easiertocontroltogether.However,themain
focusoftheschoolsystemshouldbetoguide
studentsindevelopingstagessuchas,becoming
individuals.Manyschoolsencouragegood
behaviorhowever,whatsconsideredgood
behaviorforahighschoolstudent?
Oneofthemostimportanttransitionsofa
humanslifeisfromchildhoodtoadulthood.Erik
Erikson,afamouspsychologistwhodeveloped
psychologicalstagesofahuman,doesstatethatteenagersintheagesof12to18seekforadult
identities(Erikson,1959).Duringthistransitionteenagersareseeking,relationships,futuregoals
andselfinterest.Forexamplesomestudentsdonothaveenoughrolemodelstolookupto.
Since,thisisaproblemtheycancometoconfusion.
Confusioncancorrelatetoconformity,mainlybecauseateenagerinhighschoolisinastate
wheretheydontknowwherethey
belonginsociety(Erikson,1959).

Thiscancausepopulargroupsalso
knownascliquesinhighschool

to
becomeahighauthorityinthestudent
body.Whyfollowothergroupsin
confusion

duringteenageyears?
Teenagersinhighschoolfearthefact

ofbeingtheoddoneorthedifferentpersonintheschoolorgroup.Inacliquethereisa
leaderwhothefollowerstrytomimick.Attimesreflectingonachangeofappearance.Materials

suchasclothesandaccessoriescanhelpchange
ateenagerwhilefillingtheirexpectedroleinthe
group(Myers,2009).Eventhoughitcanbe
seenasanegativetochangewhotheyaretotry
tomatchanotherpersonstudieshaveshown
thattheprocessofimitatingormimickinghelps
theconnectionandtheinteractionbetween
students(Chartrand&Bargh,1999).
AnalyzingtheresearchthatIfoundwith
psychologist,CarlosRubalcaba,Ifoundthat
conformityshowsalackofauthority.Figures
who

canhelpstudentsdeveloptheirownuniquecharacteristics.Thereisadifferencebetween
authorityfiguresandobedience.Ahighschoolstudentneedsanauthorityfigurewhomakesan
exampleofthemselvesbyprovidingapositiveinfluence.Thiscouldbeateacher,coachanda
counselor.Obedienceisthereactionoftheauthorityfigures,commandsororders(Myers,2009).
Whichattimescanbeagoodthing,wearetaughttofollowordersfromparents,policeand
teachers.Theorderscanintersectwith,

duetoademandofobedienceaninternalconflictcan
causecontradictionsin

astudentbyaskingthemselvesWhydoIhaveto?andIsthiswhatI
want?.Limitingtheirdecisionmakingtowardstheirfuture.
Socialconformityinhighschooldoeshavepositiveaspectsthemainoneisbeingacceptance.
Asastudentyouseekacceptanceandonceitisreached
a.studentthenstartstofeelmorecomfortablewithin
socialstandards.Thiscanbeapositive,

forstudentsto
knowwhat

standardsareappropriateforsociety.A
teenagerinagroupcanfeelmorecomfortablewithin
themselvesbecausetheyareseenaspartofagroup.In
orderforsocietytobeknownasasocietyweneed
normstobefollowedwhichhelpsthemovementof
schools.

Soisgoodbehaviortherightbehaviorforacertainindividualoreverystudentinahigh
school?Thegreatestdefinitionofgood,it'snottherightanswerforeveryone.Thethoughtof
beinggoodisinfactthehopeofhavingeveryonesapproval.Whileitdoeshavepositives,
whyshouldateenagerdesireapprovalmorethanselfinterest?Selfinterestcanbeselfishbut
itsthebestwayforpersonalitygrowth.Highschoolstudentsshouldbeencouragedbyboth
schoolauthorityfiguresandparentstodevelopdifferentideasoutsidethenorms.Teachers
shouldsetupworkshopsfordifferentinterestandprovideencouragementtostudents.Broad
thinkersneverfitinwhichisagreatthingbecauseithelpsustowardsthefuture.Ihope
teenagersinhighschoolsoonrealizetostartembracingtheirownthoughtsandideas.Being
uniqueanddifferentcancontributealottosocietyitself.Breakingconformityalsoencourages
positiveselfesteemanddevelopsnewstandardsforthemselves.
