Sectional views
Sectional views are used to expose the internal surfaces of an object that would otherwise be hidden from
direct view. Sectional views greatly add to the clarity of the drawing because they DO NOT CONTAIN ANY
HIDDEN LINES.

Cutting plane lines are used to define


the line along which an object is to
be cut. They should be drawn using
heavy and black cutting plane lines.
The arrowheads of a cutting plane
line indicate the direction in which to
observe the sectional view. Think of
yourself as standing on the cutting
plane line looking at the object being
drawn. The arrowheads should point
in the direction in which you are
looking-away from the sectional
view. The cutting plane will be
vertical if the arrowheads are
horizontal, and vice versa.
As shown in the figure, a floor plan is actually a section view of the building, an imaginary cut is made at lintel
level, which passes through all windows and doors. The floor plan shows what is left when the top is removed.
Section lines are used to indicate where, in a sectional view, solid material has been cut. The most common
section line pattern contains thin and black lines inclined at 45 degrees. When two or more parts are cut by
the same cutting plane line, the section cut lines must be varied to indicate clearly the different parts. Do not

draw section lines in such a way that they become parallel to any surface in the object. If the section lines
drawn at 45 degrees become parallel to any surface in the object, the angle should be changed to 30 degrees
or 60 degrees.

Labeling the cutting planes is very important in case when more than one sectional views of the object are
drawn.
