Defination: Associated Symptoms
Defination: Associated Symptoms
A stroke, a colloquially brain attack is the rapid loss of brain function due to
disturbance in the blood supply to the brain. As a result, the affected area of the
brain cannot function, which might result in an inability to move one or more limbs
on one side of the body, inability to understand or formulate speech, or an inability
to see one side of the visual field. In the 1970s the World Health Organization
defined stroke as a "neurological deficit of cerebrovascular cause that persists
beyond 24 hours or is interrupted by death within 24 hours"
Stroke symptoms typically start suddenly, over seconds to minutes, and in most
cases do not progress further. The symptoms depend on the area of the brain
affected. The more extensive the area of brain affected, the more functions that are
likely to be lost.
SYTMPTOMS
If the area of the brain affected contains one of the three prominent central nervous
system pathwayssymptoms may include:
In most cases, the symptoms affect only one side of the body (unilateral). The
defect in the brain is usually on the opposite side of the body. A stroke affecting the
brain stem and brain therefore can produce symptoms relating to deficits in these
cranial nerves:
If the cerebral cortex is involved, the CNS pathways can again be affected, but also
can produce the following symptoms:
